Our Worship Services
Worship
- All worship must be God-focused and God-glorifying. We are to
worship Him with our whole heart in a way that He prescribes and in a
way that holds Him in deepest reverence and glorifies Him.
- We will strive to provide an atmosphere where people are best
able to worship God.
-The BASICS class of SDPC
At South Dayton, we offer two different styles of worship. Our desire in
doing this flows from the two principles mentioned above. It is
important to the session and the church to understand that the style of
worship should not cause division among the church members. The same
sermon is preached in both services, and therefore the theme of the
worship that day is also the same in both services. Many of the
scripture passages and some of the texts for the music are the same as
well. As with all of our worship services, nursery is provided. Each
person is encouraged to participate in whichever worship service is most
conducive to worship for him/her, while respecting other preferences and
seeking to know what the other style can and does offer. We are to
encourage one another to know, love and obey God and to seek his glory
in the services of worship and in every part of our lives.
Sundays, 8:30 - 9:45 a.m.
This service is billed as "Traditional." The music for congregational
singing is made up primarily of hymns from writers such as Martin
Luther, Charles Wesley, Isaac Watts, as well as songs of testimony from
writers such as Fanny Crosby. The service also contains some elements of
music from the classical genre as shared by musicians who are gifted in
this way. Typical instrumentation for the traditional service is piano
and organ with the occasional flute or violin. The atmosphere is
contemplative and the attire tends to be more dressed-up.
Sundays, 11:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
This service is billed as "Contemporary." The music for congregational
singing varies, but typically centers around adult contemporary. The
songs are a mix of current worship songs from popular Christian artists,
RUF hymns, some original music and other hymns with alternate tunes.
Typical instrumentation includes piano, electric keyboard,
drums/percussion, bass/ rhythm/lead guitars. We also sometimes have
flute, violin, harmonica, mandolin, and saxophone. The atmosphere is
expressive and celebratory and the attire tends to be more casual.
Communion
We believe the regular observance of Communion is important in the life
of the church. The Holy Spirit will use this time to nourish believers
and to draw non-believers to an understanding of the work of Christ on
the cross and the redeeming power of His resurrection. Communion will be
served the 4th Sunday of every month during both regular morning worship
services. Also, there will be a special 6:00 p.m. service devoted to
prayer and communion on the second Sunday of each month. Come join us
around God's table as we commune with Him through this wonderful
sacrament.
Other Special Services
During various religious holidays, we will hold special services. These
include Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas Eve, Maundy Thursday, and Good
Friday. The styles of music and the elements of worship that are
included vary according to the occasion and the leading of the Holy
Spirit in our planning. Times and dates for these services will be
published during the appropriate season.
As with all worship services at SDPC,
Nursery is provided up to 3
years old.
